PROJECT SUMMARY: The original Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center and Physicians Auditorium was built in 1972 and had not seen significant updates since the 80’s. The renovated science center and new addition provides research laboratories, teaching laboratories, classrooms, a flat-floor, flexible auditorium, collaboration spaces, offices and a vivarium. Rosenblum Coe Architects was responsible for updating the existing exterior of the building and designing the core and shell of the new addition, while HDR provided laboratory planning and interior architecture services. Our design team focused on identifying ways to improve usability of space and accommodate changes in teaching pedagogy. The project was recognized by the Charleston Chapter of American Institute of Architects in 2019 receiving a merit award in the Preservation and Adaptive Reuse catagory.
