UNIVERSITY HEALTH SYSTEM MASTER PLAN
LOCATION: AUGUSTA, GA
SIZE: ENERGY PLANT ~20,000, MASTER PLAN 1 MILLION+SF
STATUS: COMPLETE
FIRM: HDR INC.
ROLE: PROJECT DESIGNER
PROJECT SUMMARY: Analyze the existing facility conditions of the University Hospital Main and Summerville Campuses in Augusta, GA. Identify current demand on the facilities, performance issues, space constraints, and areas of opportunity to help inform the strategic Master Facility Plan. Computational tools were developed and utilized to help the decision making process.
A new Energy plant was determined to be the first of the five “Primary Projects” identified in the Master Plan. An survey of the existing campus conditions, materials, and a precedent study of similar energy plants was done to inform the development of four schematic design options.
Considerations for the Material study included respecting the existing architectural language of the campus, maximizing natural light, screening unsightly equipment, and budget.
Precedent Studies
Four schematic designs were presented, two horizontal options and two vertical options. Vertical Option B was selected because it had the smallest impact on parking.
